Thin and light for one-handed reading
New—Kindle is 11% thinner and 16% lighter than the previous generation Kindle, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand.
No eye strain, reads like real paper
Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving text and image quality.
Unlike tablets, no blue light to disturb your sleep
Studies have shown that evening exposure to blue light from backlit screens like tablets and smartphones can suppress the body’s production of melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that helps the body fall asleep. Because the Kindle display emits no light, you can read anytime without losing sleep.
No glare in bright sunlight
Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, the high contrast touchscreen display eliminates glare in any setting—even direct sunlight.
Battery lasts weeks, not hours
Kindle doesn’t need power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.
Thousands of books, no distractions
Kindle is designed as a dedicated e-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions like email alerts and push notifications.
Flip through books while saving your place
Page Flip makes it easy to find pictures, charts, maps and even your notes and highlights from different parts of a book. While you swipe to other pages or zoom out to see page thumbnails, Page Flip automatically saves the page you’re reading, pinning it to the side of your screen so you’ll never lose your place.
Sharp, dark text
Enjoy text that reads like the printed page. Our fonts, such as Bookerly, have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability.
Export and share notes
It’s now easy to export notes and highlights from a book to your e-mail, so you can always have them on-hand for reference. Receive your notes both as an easily printable PDF that’s ready to bring to your book club, and as a simple file you can open in your favorite spreadsheet app.
Read comfortably with one hand
Lighter than a paperback, comfortably hold Kindle in one hand for those times when you can’t put the book down.
Lose yourself in a book
By design, Kindle is purpose-built for reading and creates a sanctuary so you can lose yourself in a book. Unlike tablets and phones, Kindle doesn’t distract you with social media, emails, and text messages

I was expecting the device to be a bit laggy but it's not. The Amazon store has so far had every book I punched into it. The device itself is small, extremely light and seems pretty sturdy, but I'm currently ordering a case for it to protect the screen when it's put in a bag and such for travelling, just to be on the safe side. The battery life seems amazing as well; charged quickly and hasn't needed a recharge yet although I've only had it for four days. I've been binge-reading the Throne of Glass series on it for relatively long sessions, but with the device on airplane mode since I didn't need the wifi active. Having wifi functioning would probably reduce the battery life a bit. E-books themselves are much, much cheaper than regular books which I like, although I haven't tried getting any library books from here in Canada yet. As I understand it you need to convert the file format from what the library uses to the Kindle format on your computer first.
Two of my (small) criticisms are that the power/sleep button on the bottom must be firmly pressed - it's not sensitive like on a phone or tablet. I'm also not sure if I'll be keeping my Amazon Unlimited subscription - I haven't found any of the free books on there to be of interest as of yet, in fact most of the suggestions look like the type of Twilight/50 Shades inspired novellas that consumed Wattpad. Then again, that's not my kind of book and I'm typically someone who only reads something after having it recommended to me or is from an author I like. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the device itself and look forward to taking it with me on summer trips and back into university later.
The screen looks good and is readable in daylight and at night (CANNOT be read in the absolute dark, there is NO backlight). Keeping in mind that this version does NOT have a backlight so you may have some troubles. If you want one with a backlight you need an different version of the Kindle such as the paper white. On this Kindle, navigating the screen is easy to do.
Can 'old people' use it? Absolutely. I am so grateful that Kindle is designed to use with ease, honestly, anyone can use it! You might have to show the 'old person' once or twice how to get things done, but after that, it becomes quite easy to use. Getting new books and magazines is easy. The Kindle is also light weight and can be carried around with ease. The pricing is awesome. Once you have bought the Kindle, all you need to do is buy some books. I highly recommend buying a case because though this Kindle is made tough, it's not indestructible, if it falls off your lap onto a hard surface, it will get damaged without a case. It's very important to find the right case for it so it can be used with ease and not obstruct the normal activities you want to do with it.
It's much cheaper than other entry level ereaders.
The plastic case is very light and small.
The rounded and raised edges make it easy to hold.
The daytime reading is excellent.
The touchscreen is very responsive and easy to use.
You can organize your Amazon purchased ebooks into collections.
You can add and remove ebooks in bulk with Calibre software on your computer.
Cons:
There is no light.
There are no page turn or chapter turn buttons.
You cannot turn off the touchscreen.
It does not read epub files.
Only Amazon purchased ebooks can be organized into collections.
Calibre software alone cannot organize collections.
I just wanted a good, inexpensive daytime ereader to read my hundreds of ebooks. I don't use the highlighting, dictionary, etc. functions. I was delighted with the reading experience but annoyed that I couldn't use Calibre to organize my ebooks into collections.
My perfect ereader would be small (5-6"), have a light for daytime reading and a warm light for nighttime reading, have no touchscreen, have page and chapter turn buttons, and be Calibre compatible. This isn't it, but it's okay for now.
I really prefer the new Kindle E-reader since it's:
- Lightweight and small / fits with no effort in one hand.
- Easy to use (connects flawlessly to wifi, updates and simple to navigate)
- Nice useful reading features (keeps the page, dictionnary, etc.)
- Long, long, long life battery (reading an hour or two a day, you may not need to charge it for weeks!)
I don't need the backlight as I basically never read in the dark. The only times I do it, I use a little reading/LED lamp. It's just fine. Still, if you need the light directly in your e-reader, this is not the product for you.
Otherwise, with all the books you can get / read in Amazon, for the price, it's a solid and valuable product
